What does that quote mean? I guess the first question we should ask is “What is courage?” Merriam-Webster dictionary defines courage as “the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous.” The fact is that many of the things we want most in life are sitting on the other side of our fears. We may be afraid of rejection, of being vulnerable, or of failing. Tell me, what is the worst thing that can happen if you muster up 20 seconds of your courage and attempt to try something? Sure, you may fail or be rejected, but then again, you may succeed and get the very thing you’ve wanted. If you fail, try and try again until you succeed. I’d rather fail a million times than to have never tried at all. I want a life free of regrets than a collection of them. Wouldn’t you?
I declare Monday to be Courage Day! Make a list of the things you want to achieve, then choose one you want to try for. Today is the day when you begin to attempt what you thought was impossible. Is your dream about a new job, to start a new business, to ask someone out on a date, to attempt reconciliation with a loved one, or perhaps to embark on some new life adventure?
Remember, all you need to do is muster 20 seconds to achieve that one thing that you think is difficult. Stop thinking so much and begin doing more. If you want the new job, muster the courage to begin writing a kick ass resume. Go ask the person you like out on a date. Research what it entails to start a new business, craft your business plan, and start it part-time or jump full in if you have the means to. Have the courage to sit down with your loved one and begin a loving dialogue with the person with whom you want to reconcile. Set a timeline to achieve your life adventure and make a checklist of what you need to make it a reality.
When you begin taking the steps towards your dreams, you may discover it wasn’t so difficult after all.
