For the past couple of years, I’ve been touting the importance of self-care through my book, Balanced Life Happy Life. In Chapter One: Self-Care/Inner Joy, I discuss why self-care is important to finding a blissful life. The main issue that many of us face is the habit of putting the needs of others ahead of our own. You may be a single parent, a caregiver to your parents, a people-pleaser, or just someone who enjoys taking care of others. This may come at the expense of yourself and your happiness. If you have traveled by plane, you know that on every flight, there is an in-flight lecture, instructing you that in the event of an emergency, the oxygen mask will fall from its compartment. You are to put a mask on yourself before putting a mask on any other person. The reasoning is that if your oxygen is depleted, you might faint and be of no use to anyone else.
The same analogy applies to each of us. Unfortunately unlike their male counterparts, women are taught from a young age to be caregivers and nurturers. Regardless of gender, it is not selfish to attend to our needs first. Making time for daily exercise, meditation, massages, and nutritious meals provides us with the endurance needed to take on the tasks of the day. Make yourself a priority.
I have to admit that in recent months, I have not made myself a priority. I’ve been putting the needs of my clients, friends, and family ahead of my own. The stresses of life appeared and my life went slightly off balanced. This reformed perfectionist knows when you veer off course, you can course correct. Life doesn’t have to be perfect all the time. And when life tips off balance, our next decision can put us back on track.
Having been extremely busy managing various businesses, I had not been eating right. While I have been active, I was not performing my regular strength training workouts, and my stress levels have been through the roof! Then one day, I received an offer to try out services from the local Massage Envy Spa in Hoboken. I figured it had to be the Universe telling me to take a little break. I decided it would be a good way for me to begin my path back to self-care. Without hesitation, I immediately booked a massage and facial.
What you may or may not know, there are health benefits to getting regular massages. Some benefits include:

From the moment I entered their facility to the time I left, I felt an overwhelming sense of relaxation. With my phone turned off, it was a chance to let my mind empty and to let my muscles relax. At the beginning of each session, both my massage therapist and facialist asked me a few questions to address my needs in order to be able to customize the session. They were professional and knowledgeable.
Massage Envy Spa offers two ways of obtaining services. One is via a monthly membership fee and the other is to pay non-member rates per session booked. The monthly membership includes either a one 1-hour massage or a facial per month. If you choose to book additional customizable massages and facials, they will be at discounted rates. The rates for members are about 30-40% less expensive than their non-member rates and I feel the member rate is a competitive price for a massage. I use to pay about the equivalent of their member rate 15 years ago in NYC!
One thing that was concerning to me is that you lock into a membership for one year. When I expressed my concern, the manager explained that the any unused monthly massage or facial session rolls over to the subsequent months. I can combine my sessions to customize the time. For example, if I have two 1-hour massages in my account, I can call and schedule a two hour massage for my next appointment or I can have a 1 ½ hour session. The remaining ½ hour will stay in my account until I decide to use it. If I have amassed a number of sessions, I can transfer a session once per six month period to another guest. You can surprise someone with the gift of a massage or you can squirrel the session away for yourself. After the one year term is completed, members can continue to enjoy member benefits month-to-month.
Another attractive feature is that Massage Envy Spa has 1100 locations nationwide, so if am on vacation in Hawaii and would like to schedule a massage at one of their locations there, I can do so.
My experience at the Massage Envy Spa in Hoboken was a positive one. Besides walking out the door feeling a sense of relaxation, renewal, and rejuvenation, I also left remembering how great it feels when I am taking care of myself and making myself a priority.
